Who needs PAYE registration?

Employers need to register with the HMRC to report and pay income tax and National Insurance contributions (NICs) on behalf of their employees.

If you’re the only employee in your company and your salary exceeds the National Insurance Lower Earnings Limit (£6,240 per year), PAYE registration is necessary.

Employers must register for PAYE if any of the following applies to an employee (directors of a limited company included) in the current tax year:

  • They're paid £123 or more a week
  • They get expenses and company benefits
  • They're getting a pension
  • They've had another job

What happens after you register for PAYE online?

  • Once registered, you will need to report your employees' payments and deductions to HMRC on or before each payday.
  • You will need to comply with various reporting requirements and deadlines to avoid penalties. This includes reporting when a new employee joins, if an employee's circumstances change, and running annual reports at the end of the tax year.
  • Maintain accurate payroll records for your employees.
  • Deduct the correct amount of income tax and National Insurance contributions from your employees' pay.
  • Submit Real Time Information (RTI) to HMRC each time you pay your employees.
  • Pay the deducted income tax and National Insurance contributions to HMRC on time, usually on a monthly or quarterly basis.
  • Provide your employees with payslips detailing their earnings, deductions, and net pay.
